It Takes Time

yoyo,
I have been attending the Yoyo Club regularly, and I have been learning some new stuff. This semester is almost over, meaning that I don't have that much more time to improve. I think that learning new tricks will take time, so I am just going to improve the ones that I already know, and become more comfortable with them.

I had no idea how I would progress in this project. I thought yoyoing would be way easier than it was. It was a challenge for me, but it was still enjoyable. Frustration was a huge factor during this project. I would get frustrated when my binds wouldn't work, or when my yoyo would spin out and I couldn't bring it back. It was also frustrating when even a short simple trick was difficult to learn. I chose yoyoing for my passion project because I thought it would be fun, entertaining, simple, and enjoyable, and also something I would like to keep doing after this semester. It was all of those things, but with every new thing comes many challenges. Becoming part of the yoyo world was a whole new experience; meeting new people, being amazed at the talent they have, and learning all about it. This project definitely shocked me.

When I started this project, I learned everything from youtube tutorials, I couldn't do anything without them. Now that I have been yoyoing for a while, I am able to just freely spin the yoyo and try new things. I am not that great at it yet, but I can see improvement. I enjoy being able to do this, I can just grab my yoyo and start going, instead of having to search a new video to learn and following along.

One of my goals for the month of May was to be able to do the Breakaway throw easily. I can now say that I can do that. I have been working on that for a very long time, and with much practice and frustration, I can do it now. It feels good to be able to do that now because so many tricks are based off of that throw. At Yoyo Club, I was asking about this throw, and one guy said that once I learn it, a lot of tricks will come much easier.

All in all, I did hope that I would be farther than I am at this point, but seeing how difficult yoyoing actually is, I didn't do too bad. As these last couple weeks will come fast, I hope to keep attending Yoyo Club, and become even more comfortable with my yoyo.

The Yoyo Club

yoyo,
I just recently attended The Yoyo Club. I was very nervous in going to this club because I had no idea what it was going to be like. I had put it off for a couple weeks now but I finally built up the courage to go, and I am very happy that I did. I was expecting there to be a lot of people there of all different skill levels but only a couple people showed up. I had watched videos of people yoyoing but I had never seen good yoyoing first hand before. I was very impressed with the skill level some of these people had, it was mind blowing to watch. It also encouraged me to keep it up because it is possible to get better. I asked questions and they were very open to helping me out and answering my questions. My hope is to attend this club whenever they meet and ask more questions about the troubles I'm having and progress faster than I have been. All together I am very happy that I went to The Yoyo Club, talked about my project with them, and learned what I needed to progress.

"The Bow Tie" and "Rock the Baby"

Here is a video as suggested of the first two tricks I have learnt. The tricks themselves were not very difficult to learn but learning the bind as mentioned in my last post was the trick. Once I learned the bind, these tricks were easier to do. The first trick in the video is The Bow Tie, and the second trick is Rock the Baby. Enjoy!

Progress/The Basics

yoyo,
I am now a couple weeks into this project, I can't say I have been progressing at the steady pace I would want to be but I have made some improvement. I started off in the Beginner Tricks such as the basic throw and walk the dog. I have now progressed into the 1A Yoyo Tricks in the Unresponsive Basics category. Most of these tricks require two types of throw, the basic throw, and the breakaway. I have been struggling with the breakaway throw for a while now and just can't get the hang of it. The breakaway is what you need for basically all of the tricks after this point. Once I learn this type of throw, my plan is to improve at a much faster pace.

I have an unresponsive yoyo, to those of you who don't know what that is, basically it just means that the yoyo itself won't come back to your hand automatically. Here is where you have to learn a bind. Binds are certain tricks that will get the yoyo to come back up to your hand, because it won't do it by itself. So far I have learned one bind, but there is many more to learn. A responsive yoyo on the other hand will automatically come back to your hand when you want it to. A basic flick of the wrist should usually get it up. The difference between the two is that in unresponsive yoyoing, you can do tricks that last longer and the yoyo will spin longer at the end of its axis. Also, with an unresponsive yoyo, you can do unresponsive and responsive tricks. But in responsive yoyoing, the yoyo does not spin as long and you can only do responsive tricks with it. By going from a responsive yoyo to an unresponsive yoyo, the only major difference is learning the binds. You also have to learn to control how long the yoyo spins for. If it spins too long at the end of the string, a bind will not work. That is why you have to kind of feel for how long it can spin and have the bind still work. The bind will not work with a loose spinning string. I still have trouble with this but it's been coming with practice.

My Plan

yoyo,
In the next couple of months, I will be progressing in learning how to yoyo. Yoyoing has become huge in the last couple of years and I never knew how much there was to it. I was always interested in learning professional tricks and this is the perfect opportunity to do so. I get all of my information and new tricks from yoyotricks.com. The tutorial videos on the website and the information they have to give is very useful. I never knew how much there was in the yoyo industry until I visited this website. Since I first looked at this website, I have already learned a lot of information.

If you visit the website above, you will see there is so many different kinds of yoyo tricks and even different styles of yoyoing. I have been doing this for a couple weeks now and I have already gotten past beginner tricks and now I am on to 1A tricks. It starts with Beginner Tricks, then on to 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A Tricks. Yoyos can be very expensive, and certain styles of yoyoing require different yoyos. One of my goals is to make it to the 5A tricks, but still be able to use yoyos within a price limit. There is so many tricks out there to learn, on and off the website I use, but I also want to create my own tricks.

I usually just yoyo in my spare time, because it is not very hard to fit it into my schedule.  I want to be able to learn a new trick every week or week and a half. Depending on the trick, I could possibly do more than one in that amount of time, but I am just estimating. Hopefully if I follow this schedule, I will approximately be able to learn 10-15 new tricks, but hopefully I can learn more.

1 Peter 4:10 says, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."
